As a kid and young adult, it would have been insulting to root-vegetable-kind to call myself a couch potato. Other than being forced almost at gunpoint to endure PE lessons at school, the only time of the year I ever physically exerted myself was on our annual family holiday to Norway, when I loved rowing, swimming and fishing in the fjords in the summer or skiing in the winter. It was only in adulthood, when the dreary drudge of reality working in an office from Monday to Friday, that I came to sport, to break the monotony and re-energise myself both physically and mentally.
Starting in the gym and then getting the running bug, I now also swim and go to Pilates. However still, as during those increasingly distant days of my youth, I am happiest when exercising outside!
I joined a local running club, and am an active participant as a “back of the pack” club road, cross country and trail runner and volunteer. As well as running on my own or with friends, at club on training nights and going to races, I love the local Saturday morning parkrun, including a good catch-up in the café afterwards with friends. I am a sports enthusiast so as well taking part in athletics I also love watching most sports including football, cricket and just about ANY sport at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games!
WHY HANG YOUR GONG?
As proud as I was of all the medals I received at the end of a running race, (as well as a good deal of shock and awe that I was reaching the finishing line, never-mind earning medals!) they gradually tended to end up forgotten about in several drawers. I did choose to “display” a few medals temporarily, by hanging them off, of all things, a Viking helmet! Believe me when I say, this wasn’t one of my better ideas.
So, I started looking around at the medal hangers already on sale. Most of them were poor-quality imports, usually manufactured from easily breakable perspex or acrylic, and the designs were functional but unimaginative.
My solution was to design and manufacture some ourselves in the UK. Fast forward several months, various design prototypes and several ‘finishes’ culminating in a durable, powder-coated steel medal hanger design. The unique paired hanging-bars allow you to easily loop the ribbons without the need to tie or cut them to adjust the height each medal is displayed at.
CELEBRATE - MOTIVATE - INSPIRE - ACTIVATE
It's not always easy to get out there, put on trainers, and in my case, get outside to train on cold and rainy dark Lancashire evenings. Medals are a good way to motivate you. You can celebrate achieving your goals and this can inspire and activate you into reaching new ones. From the first medals I earned back in the days when I thought running to the bus stop was an impossibility, to my proudest moment when I earned my 2016 London Marathon medal, all of them represent significant personal achievements.
Displaying your medals reminds you of what you are really capable of if you put your mind to it and you can celebrate and share your achievements with those who have helped you get there. The last medals I added were from the Liverpool Rock 'N' Roll 5K and 1 Mile races and my next ones to add to the collection will (hopefully!!!) be for the JD Gyms City of Preston 10K in September and the Arriva Scouse 5K in Liverpool in October 2018.
